THE DEPARTMENT OF FOREIGN LANGUAGES AND LITERATURE BRIEF

The Department of Foreign Languages and Literature at  the University is one of the Departments under the College of Humanities and Social sciences established by the university in  2009, this department is among other ( seven ) 7 departments under the college in Dodoma University

This department is under Dr. Rafiki Yohana Sebonde, it comprises other Languages which are English, French, Arab, Japanes, Russian and Korea, Other Language is Chines under CONFUCIUS program at Dodoma University.

Under this department, and the college in general the students admission are based on High school qualifications, or equivalent qualifications accredited by NACTE ( National Council for Technical Education, Admission is every other academic year.
  Objectives:

One of the Department objectives is building students capacity and enable them to interact professionally under the Languages they study, Includes enable them accessing scholarships for further studies in other respective countries.

Also the department is training some of the Government and private sectors officials to enable them getting easy access to the respective countries and strengthen Social and economical relationship among countries.

CONFUCIUS INSTITUTE:

At the University of |Dodoma ,also they provide CHINES Lessons.

Chines classes are of short courses under the Confucius which are,  one month and three month Chinese Language Learning Class for the Students from the Universities, Institutes and Colleges found in Dodoma Region, this has started since 10March,2013 conducted at the Confucius Institute at the School of Humanities Class rooms on every week day from 17.00 to 19.00hrs

Moreover, the Institute at the end of the programme will issue attendance certificates to participants. The Chinese Class requires pre-registration, only few students fit the Class, So FIRST COME FIRST SERVED.

This institute is headed by Dr. Ahmad Kanyama who is a  Programme Administrator
Apart from the Language, at this |Institute they also teach KunFu, Singing and Dancing

KOREAN LANGUAGE:


Programme Specification

Korea has been successfully developing in all aspects of social, economic and cultural fields and now it has reached a stage that the world is paying attention to its position and important role in the world community. Accordingly, the demand to learn Korean language is rapidly increasing domestically and internationally. This programme responds to such world demand of Korean Language.

This programme is designed to develop students’ comprehensive conversation skills in Korean and to build a solid foundation for Korean language and Korean culture. It aims to train students to perform appropriate spoken and written communication in daily life situations with communicative skills. This will cover four language areas, namely, listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Also, students will learn how to express ideas on concrete and diverse topics, as well as how to combine ideas in various ways. It emphasizes the ability to use Korean properly in a given situation or a task and introduces students to useful information concerning Korean culture.

Learning Outcomes 

At the end of the programme, students are expected to have acquired knowledge that will enable them to:
  • Understand features of written and spoken Korean language, and pragmatic Korean
  • Acquire advanced Korean language skills in professional areas.
  • Acquire concrete language skills necessary for research and employment
  • Perform tasks related to Korean language and culture.

ARABIC:


 Currently the University has not admitted n Arabic Language student , the program will admit student  on all cases, short courses and long courses:

Programme Specification

This programme aims at equipping students with Linguistic and Arabic language knowledge and skills. To achieve this, the programme is designed to introduce students to different Linguistic theories and various rules that govern Arabic language. Among the theories to be covered include: syntactic theories, sociolinguistic theories, pragmatic theories, language acquisition theories, proofreading, translation and interpretation theories, meaning related theories, phonological and morphological theories, etc. the above mentioned theories and others will give the right competence to students in analyzing language related materials in a scholarly manner.

Learning Outcomes 

At the end of the course, students are expected to be well informed Arabic language specialists and hence be able to employ themselves or to be employed as:

  • Arabic Language consultants
  • Proofreaders
  • Translators
  • Interpreters
  • Language planners
  • Language analysts
  • Public speakers
  • Language researchers
  • Lexicographers etc.



FRENCH CLASSES:


French is one of the languages taught at the College of Arts ,Media and designs, tyhe class has started in 2009.

Currently the class has registered 16 students, for both Bachelor degree and short courses, the school curriculum is three years course for the bachelor degree.

JAPANES LANGUAGE:



Programme Specification

Today’s high-speed globalization has led us to be like “a small world”. However, Japan must be still one of the far and unknown countries to the Tanzanian people. Through learning Japanese language, students will acquire an opportunity to explore Japanese culture, spirit, trend and so on. The language is strongly reflected in their culture and the way of thinking. I most welcome Students are welcome to take a ticket to experience Japan with learning Japanese with a Native Japanese Speaker, and at the same time, It is true that students can deepen an appreciation of their own language and culture.
This programme is designed to be able to increase students’ Japanese language ability synthetically. In other words, the students will be able to learn well-balanced four indispensable skills such as Speaking, Listening, Writing and Reading. In addition, this programme places a special emphasis on conversation. It goes without saying that improvements in the students’ communication skills are important above all. It also aims to build students basis for favorable relations with Japanese people by talking about themselves and their surroundings and circumstances, and asking about those of others.

Learning Outcomes 

At the end of the programme, students will be able to acquire the following ability in Japanese language.

  • Understand Japanese used in everyday situations such as coherent conversations and news reports, spoken natural speed.
  • Understand reading matters on general topics written by Japanese language such as articles and commentaries in newspaper and magazines.
  • Acquire Japanese language abilities necessary for research and employment.
  • Acquire a firm foundation for more advanced Japanese language study.
  • Comprehend Japanese custom and culture deeply through Japanese language.

RUSSIAN:


Programme Specification

Russin languange :In today’s fast globalizing world, besides the English language and culture, a few other languages continue to play an important role. Among these one should mention the Russian language and culture recognized by widely acknowledged international organizations such as the UN and UNESCO as an international language. It can hardly be considered an accident if one takes the vast territory of Russia, its economic, political and cultural potential into account. Hence it could by no means be considered accidental that the necessity to study Russian has been realized by the University of Dodoma.
The proposed programme is designed for foreigners who had no previous experience in learning Russian or being exposed to it. It is 21 months degree offered under a full time basis and has a coursework component followed by a Final Examination. There will be 6 semesters in which a student will have to accumulate a minimum of 385 credits to graduate. The Programme has a strong practical emphasis, where students should be ready to add extra hours of individual and group work.

Learning Outcomes 

The achievement of B2 Level will enable students to communicate in Russian in everyday situations as well as in socio-cultural and academic-professional environment. At the end of the Programme students are expected to have acquired knowledge which will make it possible for them to:
  • Understand a spoken text (of monologic/dialogic character) with sufficient depths and completeness;
  • Read and understand authentic (of minimally adapted) texts within the covered lexical and grammatical material;
  • Compose a written text (an essay/ exposition) of monologic character with the given communicative intent;
  • Have the ability and capacity of being involved in a variety of spoken exchanges:
  • To be able to participate in a dialogue (including the request, exchange and inducement of information);
  • To produce and reproduce oral texts of monologic character within the given communicative intent.
The overall objective of this Programme is to prepare a cadre of high-quality language skills to take care of matters related to the Russian Language professionally. The Programme aims to prepare competent professionals who can handle Russian Language issues efficiently and effectively; it prepares Russian aspirants who can generate new knowledge in its analyses, use, and teaching in the context of Tanzania and beyond.
